The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology says it is concerned over fake news on WhatsApp and Facebook suggesting that the government is spying on citizens through mobile phones and social media platforms.
According to the ministry, the messages, which started circulating two years ago, have now become a thorn in the flesh of the State.
The ministry’s executive director Mbeuta Ua-Ndjarakana on Wednesday described the messages as misleading and anti-government, meant to tarnish the government’s image and confuse the public.
“The ministry has not passed any such regulation and it is not in possession of any system that has links to the public’s cellphones,” explained Ua-Ndjarakana.
“It should be noted that the WhatsApp message currently circulating indicating that all calls are being recorded, and that social media platforms are being monitored, is in fact fake news.”
Ua-Ndjarakana urged the public to stop circulating such fake news.
